Bible Study Series: Getting Rid OF Emotional Baggage

GETTING RID OF EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE

We all have issues we deal with on a daily basis. They only

Become a problem when you allow them to affect you

Emotionally. They become a lingering problem when you

Can’t resolve them and carry them into your daily activities.

Some issues need to be resolved and some are not worth a

Second thought. There is no issue at any time you need to worry

About.

Hurts, pain, disappointments, failed relationships, wrongs done to us,

Family problems and others all disturb our emotional well-being.

We know that Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the

Holy Spirit are intercessors before the Father. The question is

How do we use these powerful resources to maintain an

Emotional balance that allows us to function as God designed us.

We have the divine Word which is Jesus. We have the Holy Spirit

Who teaches and inspires the divine Word in all activities of

Our lives if we allow Him.

The Bible defines wisdom as the fear of the Lord.

Psalms 111:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;

all who follow his precepts have good understanding.

To him belongs eternal praise.

I see Wisdom in action as feeding on the divine instructions of God

In daily activities. Allowing the divine Word to control you is wisdom

In action.

DROPPING OFF THE EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE

To rid ourselves of emotional baggage we must feed on the divine

Instructions of God guided by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus came down from heaven to release us from bondage, physical and

emotional.

Isaiah 61:1

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.

The good news is the Word of God is filled with all His promises. We were

Chosen to hear the good news.

God knew that His Chosen would be brokenhearted. He knew the issues of today would trouble us. He knew that the stuff around us would

Captivate and bind us. He came to release us so we would be free.

If we don’t know the truth, we cannot be set free. People will lie to you

About who you are and what you are capable of doing. They will put

You in a box and hope you stay there. It’s all a lie because Jesus has

Set you free.

Luke 19:10

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.

There are some broken marriages, broken families, broken dreams, broken

Hopes, broken this and broken that. All of that is emotional baggage that

Weighs us down. The joy of the Lord can get lost in our brokenness.

.

THE SOURCE OF YOUR STRENGTH

Dr Charles Stanley wrote this in his book The Source Of My Strength;

“ Emotional baggage keeps a person in spiritual bondage.

It Keeps a person from being the kind of person God wants us to be

It keeps a person from doing what God calls us to do.

It keeps a person paralyzed with doubt, fear, and self-incrimination.

It keeps a person from developing a healthy self-image.

We should not hold on to the past. We cannot change the past. We have to get rid of that which holds us down.

The apostle Paule said this;

Philippians 3:13-14

One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

We ought to focus on the good in life and the blessings God gives us

Each day.

Let me give you a tip. This is a way of knowing you have let go of the

Past. When you can look at a person or thing that has hurt you with a

Smile and say thank God for him/her or it.

In failed relationships, sometimes you have to move on. I am done with this. In failed goals and aspirations, let them go, God has new goals and

Aspirations.

THE DIFFICULTY OF LETTING GO OF THE PAST

Why do we have trouble letting go of the past?

Some people can’t let go of the past because they are comfortable

With the feeling. They may not know what to do without the pain.

Some people can’t let go of the past because it is admitting defeat and

The loss of an opportunity to get even.

Some people can’t let go of the past because they are unable to forgive.

They can’t forgive others and they can’t forgive themselves.

Jesus is the prime example of letting go of the past.

After being tried for sins He didn’t commit, beaten, lied on and

Rejected, His final words were; Father into thy hand I commit my spirit

Luke 22:36

Jesus committed Himself to the will of the Father. It is tough

To submit to the Father when you don’t know the outcome.

But Jesus also knew how to forgive. Father, forgive them for they

Know not what they do. Luke 22:34

Forgiveness is a greater benefit to you.

Matthew 6:15

But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

We count the wrongs done to us. But do we count the wrongs we have done to others?

Our emotional balance is disturbed each day because of the horrors we

We witness on TV and in our communities.

LET GO AND LET GOD

We must have a way of eliminating the emotional load we carry

We do have a load bearer. It is Jesus

Philippians 4:6-7

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Scripture sounds good on paper. But putting the wisdom of God

Into practice takes courage. Any Bible-studying, church-going Christian

Knows the scripture. But putting the scripture into action is another story.

The Lord will not relieve the pain of the past or relieve the agony of today

Unless we come to Him with our problems and trust Him.

Proverbs 3:5-7

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart

and lean not on your own understanding;

6 in all your ways acknowledge him,

and he will make your paths straight.

Without trust, we cannot activate the power of Jesus in our request.

Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

ACTIVATING GOD’S POWER IN OUR LIVES

Our desire should be first to please God. Our request ought to

Have as it’s objective to give God glory.

God’s glory is us, his chosen in a happy and blessed state of mind.

Ecclesiastes 12:13

Fear God and keep his commandments,

for this is the whole duty of man.

Isaiah 43:7-8

Everyone who is called by my name,

whom I created for my glory,

whom I formed and made.\”

Knowing that we were made for God’s glory ought to give

Us courage to rid ourselves of emotional baggage

Proverbs 15:15

All the days of the oppressed are wretched,

but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.

God’s desire for us is a continual feast in His love

FIVE STEPS TO EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

  1. LET GO AND LET GOD

You cannot control others, but you can control you

Psalms 46:10-11

\”Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth.\”

  1. Lay your emotional baggage at the feet of Jesus

Luke 8:36

They found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind:

  1. Believe you have the strength to get rid of emotional Baggage.

Philippians 4:13

I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

  1. Accept that what you are going through is for your good

Romans 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

  1. Replace your emotional baggage with the spirit of God

Ephesians 5:18

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit
