PREPARED TO BE KING
1 Sam 19:8-18
GOD’S TRAINING PROGRAM
V:8. Once more war broke out, and David went out and fought the Philistines. He struck them with such force that they fled before him.
9 But an evil spirit from the Lord came upon Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. While David was playing the harp, 10 Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded him as Saul drove the spear into the wall.
God will Train You For The Position He called You To
A. David was anointed to be king as a teenager and placed under
Saul, the king he would replace.
1. Saul lost the favor of God because of his disobedience to God’s
commands.
2. God removed His spirit from Saul and placed it on David.
3. Saul refused to take responsibility for the consequences of his
disobedience.
4. Saul refused to humble himself before God
5. I believe he knew David was his replacement, so tried to kill
or have him killed
B. David’s defeat of the Philistine giant Goliath, brought him
approval of the people of Israel, but not king Saul.
1. Notice it was God who stirred up the mind of Saul to kill David.
2. It was God who placed David in position to be killed by Saul, Why?
3. God gave Saul over to his own evil desires (18:24 and 19:1)
a. Saul was jealous and fearful of David’s success in battle.
b. Saul would not listen to the reasoning of his son, Jonathan
not to harm David who was good for Israel.
C. Training comes with heartaches of growing up to see the evil
In others.
1. David’s authority would always be challenged by those inside
Israel and those outside Israel.
2. What better way to learn to defend his anointing than under the
hand of God.
3. God will not put more on us than we can bear.
4. God will always provide a way for His chosen to escape danger.
1 Cor 10:13
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God
is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can
But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you
can stand up under it.
5. David, a teenager needed the training to be successful as a leader
and the wisdom to know how to handle those who hated him.
6. He gained both under Saul.
GOD GIVES YOU ADVANCE WARNINGS OF DANGER
V10b.That night David made good his escape.
11 Saul sent men to David\’s house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. But Michal, David\’s wife, warned him, \”If you don\’t run for your life tonight, tomorrow you\’ll be killed.\” 12 So Michal let David down through a window, and he fled and escaped. 13 Then Michal took an idol and laid it on the bed, covering it with a garment and putting some goats\’ hair at the head.
14 When Saul sent the men to capture David, Michal said, \”He is ill.\”
A. When you are willing to serve God, He will surround you with people
who love you.
1 God used two people out of Saul’s family to warn David of Saul’s
plans to kill him. (Saul’s daughter and son).
2. God shows His love for us in what He does to protect us.
3. God teaches us how to love by His love.
B. We have to learn to trust the people who God places in our lives
listen to their counsel.
1. God uses others to confuse or deceive your enemy.
2. God uses the creativity of others to benefit you.
3. The idol gods that Israel craved, became a stepping stone for
David’s escape.
C. Note, it was the city leaders who rejected God’s rule and asked for a king.
1. The general population worshipped the Lord.
2. We need to be careful who we chose to lead us.
3. The wrong people in power will reject the living God and ignore
the rights of people.
THE RESPOSIBILITY TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY
15 Then Saul sent the men back to see David and told them, \”Bring him up to me in his bed so that I may kill him.\” 16 But when the men entered, there was the idol in the bed, and at the head was some goats\’ hair.
17 Saul said to Michal, \”Why did you deceive me like this and send my enemy away so that he escaped?\”
Michal told him, \”He said to me, \’Let me get away. Why should I kill you?\’\”
A. When some one is intent on harming you, they will never give up
their desire.
1. God is always one step ahead of your enemy.
2. Your enemy will continue to plan, but God will block
their plans against you.
B. One thing we see in this lesson, is the love of David’s wife exceeded the
love for her father, the king..
1. Machal was following God’s command.
Gen 2:24
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave
unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
2. Sometimes God has to separate you from those around you, to save
you.
Deut 11:22-24
For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I
command you, to do them, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all
his ways, and to cleave unto him;
Then will the Lord drive out all these nations from before you, and
ye shall possess greater nations and mightier than yourselves.
3. Notice, Machal and Jonathan listen to God rather than their father.
THE LORD OUR REFUSE
V:18 When David had fled and made his escape, he went to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there.?\”
A. The Lord is your refuse .
1. Whenever you are troubled, find yourself in prayer.
2. The Lord will comfort you in your hour of need.
B. The Lord may not eliminate your troubles, but He
can elevate you above them in your mind.
1. Samuel the prophet of God took David to a place where
he could get away from the trouble of Saul’s hatred.
2. God can give you a time of rest.
3. David could not understand Saul’s desire to kill him, but he
made no plans to fight him.
4. Saul was king and David consider himself under his authority.
