THE HOLY SPIRIT LESSON 2
God Before time and matter existed as one God in three persons;
God the Father, God The Son, and God The Holy Spirit
THE PERSONALITY AND THE HOLY SPIRIT
The person of the Holy Spirit has human aspects and can be moved
Emotionally The Holy Spirit inspires, resides in us, and is our teacher
Of all things.
The Holy Spirit has a mind
Romans 8:27
27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God\’s will.
NIV
The Holy Spirit Knows the will of the Father. Since He is one with Father
He knows all. Romans 8:27
The Holy Spirit intercedes for the saints (you and I) Romans 8:28
The Holy Spirit can be grieved
Ephesians 4:30-31
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
According to the text, the Spirit protects us from our sinful selves
THE HOLY SPIRIT COMMUNICATES WITH BELIEVERS
The Holy Spirit does not speak on Its own, but the Word of God,
John 16:13
13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
Several things we see in this verse
The Holy Spirit leaves the authority of the Word to Jesus
The Holy Spirit will not speak new words
The Holy Spirit will tell you the future as spoken by Jesus
When Jesus ascended back into heaven to be with the Father, He left
The Old Testament complete and in print with many copies. The Old
Testament according to the dating of the Dead Sea Scrolls was
Complete 300 years before the birth of Jesus in the flesh.
The New Testament was complete in the minds of His apostles. The
Writing of the New Testament would be inspired by the Holy Spirit.
THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN BE INSULTED
Hebrews 10:29-30
How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?
THE HOLY SPIRIT INSPIRES MEN TO ACT
1 Peter 1:21
21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
NIV
THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVE ACCESS TO GOD
Jude 20-21
But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. 21 Keep yourselves in God\’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.
The Holy Spirit is our connection to the Father
Ephesians 1:18
Pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints
To get a deeper understanding of the Spirit let\’s start with a familiar scripture, 2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
NIV
The Greek word God-breathed or given by inspiration of God is Theopneustos. Theo is God and pneustos is spirit or breath.
According to 2 Timothy, the Holy Spirit is the divine author of the
Scripture.
2 Peter 1:21
For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Let’s look at two examples of the New Testament confirming Old Testament
Prophecy of the Holy Spirit guiding the words of men.
Acts 1:16
16 and said, \”Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas,
Psalms 41:9
Even my close friend, whom I trusted,
he who shared my bread,
has lifted up his heel against me.
Hebrews 3:7-8
7 So, as the Holy Spirit says:
\”Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion,
during the time of testing in the desert,
Psalms 95:7-9
7 for he is our God
and we are the people of his pasture,
the flock under his care.
Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,
as you did that day at Massah in the desert,
9 where your fathers tested and tried me,
The HolySpirit is not just the power of God that indwells every believer
But an integral deity in the God Head, the Holy Trinity, working
throughout eternity the divine will.
From the start of creation, we see the Holy Spirit working that which was
Formless and void.
Genesis 1:1-2
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
The Hebrew word for hovering is rachaph which means flutter, shake, fertilizing. From the beginning, the Holy Spirit was energizing the whole of the creation.
THE HOLY SPIRIT STRIVES WITH SINFUL MAN
The Spirit is not mentioned again until the dispensation of conscience.
Genesis 6:3
Then the Lord said, \”My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years.\”
Genesis 6:5-7
The Lord saw how great man\’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.
Notice how God ties in his emotions with the Holy Spirit and man.
Compare this with God’s command to man.
Ephesians 4:30
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
God the Father is the creator, God the Son is the salvation of man, and God the Holy Spirit is the energy driving sinful man toward salvation and redemption.
THE LIFE-GIVING SPIRIT OF GOD
It is the Spirit Of God that gives life to each of us
Job 33:4
The Spirit of God has made me;
the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
The Holy Spirt is the life in us
Job 34:14-15
14 If it were his intention
and he withdrew his spirit and breath,
15 all mankind would perish together
and man would return to the dust.
The Holy Spirit guides and directs our lives
After Jesus’s baptism, it was the spirit that carried Him
Into the desert
Matthew 4:1-2
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.
The Holy Spirit lives inside of every believer starting with Jesus in the flesh
John 19:30
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, \”It is finished.\” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Notice, even in death Jesus humbled Himself to the Father with the bowing
Of His head.
Because of the finished work of Jesus on the cross, the Holy Spirit has taken up residence in every believer.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17
Don\’t you know that you yourselves are God\’s temple and that God\’s Spirit lives in you?
We have been equipped with power. The question is, will we submit ourselves to God’s divine power? Or will we live in the weakness of the
World?
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE DESIGNER OF WORSHIP
During the Dispensation of the Law (Old Testament Times), the Holy Spirit
Was not given to everyone. It was only given to those who were given
Specific task by God. The tabernacle was designed by the Father for
Israel to worship God in the desert after leaving Egypt.
God equipped the builders of the great tent with all the skills and talents
Fashion and make all the parts of the movable structure.
Exodus 31:1-7
Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 \”See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts — 4 to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, 5 to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship. 6 Moreover, I have appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, to help him. Also I have given skill to all the craftsmen to make everything I have commanded you: 7 the Tent of Meeting, the ark of the Testimony with the atonement cover on it, and all the other furnishings of the tent
Today each of us have been given the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who
Equips believers with all the wisdom, talents, and skills to do the
The work of God and to worship in spirit and in truth.
