This Week\’s Sunday School Lesson, :Humble Submission To The Father:, John 19:16-30, 2/20/2022

HUMBLE SUBMISSION TO THE FATHER

John 19:16-30

A DIVINELY APPROVED DEATH BY UNJUST MEN

Through his wife Pilate came under the divine influence of the Lord.

Pilate had a note from his wife while he was on the judgement seat not to

Condemn Jesus

Matthew 27:19

While Pilate was sitting on the judge\’s seat, his wife sent him this message: \”Don\’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.\”

V:16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). 18 Here they crucified him, and with him two others — one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

  1. Sometimes it is not what you do that puts trouble in your life, but who doesn’t like you.
  2. Jesus was tried by the court of public opinion.
  3. Mainly, He was tried by the chief religious’ officer of the community
  4. Pilate found no guilt in Jesus and placed the responsibility on the Chief Priest.
  5. According to the Jewish custom during the Passover festival, a prisoner could be released
  6. The Chief Priest chose Barabbas, a common criminal, a murderer to be released.
  7. They counted Jesus among the worst criminals.
  8. Jesus who had all power in His hands chose to bear the burden of the sins of the world on His back.
  9. The weight of the cross was about 300 pounds. The crossbar was about 90 pounds
  10. We don’t know what Jesus weighed, however some guess between 140 to 200 pounds.
  11. He showed his inner strength by bearing the cross without complaint.
  12. He could have easily called a legion of angels to bear the cross.
  13. He showed His humble submission, by bearing the shame of the cross before us and for us.
  14. The place of the skull represents death and mortality.
  15. Jesus brought immortality to the grave.
  16. His cross was placed between the crosses of two thieves
  17. The one on His right receives immortality at the grave.
  18. The suffering Jesus took time to bring salvation to a willing

Spirit on the cross.

  • The one on the left refused Jesus and remained mortal.
  • We are all in the graveyard of sin.
  • We have a choice, Jesus or death.
  • We have a choice eternal life or eternal damnation.
  • They took Jesus out of the city so as not to defile the Passover festival.
  • They claimed to be clean on the outside but were rotten on the inside.
  • They had hundreds of pools inside the city for ritual cleansing.
  • They thought nothing of spiritual cleaning.
  • It was the mission of Jesus to provide a way for spiritual cleansing.

THE KING SUFFERED FOR THOSE WHO REJECTED HIM

V:19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, \”Do not write \’The King of the Jews,\’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.\”

22 Pilate answered, \”What I have written, I have written.\”

  1. Even though Pilate didn’t know Jesus, he was under the influence of divine guidance.
  2. It is also significant that this title was written in three languages: Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. Hebrew represents Hebrew religion, Latin represents Roman politics, and Greek represents Greek culture. These three together represent the entire world, all of mankind. This signifies that the Lord Jesus was killed by and for all mankind. Not long after the Lord’s death, certain Jews, Romans, and Greeks were saved. The Lord Jesus was put to death for the entire human race as represented by these three languages. Therefore, the title written by Pilate is a sign. (ministrysamples.org)
  3. What the chief priest didn’t want known about Jesus was printed in full view for everyone to see.
  4. He was King of Kings.
  5. He was the King of the entire universe.
  6. Jesus foreknew and controlled every event of His crucifixion.

Isaiah 53:12

Therefore, I will give him a portion among the great,

and he will divide the spoils with the strong,

because he poured out his life unto death,

and was numbered with the transgressors.

For he bore the sin of many,

and made intercession for the transgressors.

NIV

  • We ought not feel sad for Jesus, but glad He chose to bear our sins on

The cross.

COMMON GRACE FOR ALL, SPECIAL GRACE FOR THE ELECT

V:23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 \”Let\’s not tear it,\” they said to one another. \”Let\’s decide by lot who will get it.\”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said,

\”They divided my garments among them

and cast lots for my clothing.\”  So this is what the soldiers did.

  1. The grace of our Lord Jesus is unlimited.

COMMON GRACE

  1.  His common grace is equally divided among all the world.
  2. The outer garment may represent all that we see that benefits the world
  3. Everyone gets the benefits of the son and the stars.
  4. Everyone is refreshed by the rain.
  5. Everyone is nourished by the fruit of the ground and the fish in the sea.

SPECIAL GRACE

  • The inner garment, the one close to his flesh was not torn
  • The solders cast lots for it.
  • It was seamless so they recognized it’s higher value.
  • That higher value may represent God’s special grace reserved for his elect.
  • The special grace is our salvation, eternal life.
  • The lots may represent God divine sovereignty of choice.
  • None of us know why we were chosen for salvation.
  • None of us deserve salvation.
  • Thank God we were chosen for His special grace

JESUS HAS TIME FOR YOUR SITUATION

V:25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother\’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, \”Dear woman, here is your son,\”  27 and to the disciple, \”Here is your mother.\” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

  1. The Lord know our needs.
  2. Even on the cross Jesus ministered to the saints.
  3. Jesus knew his mother nearing 50 years of age (married at 13 to 15 plus 33 years of Jesus life)

Needed some one reliable to take care of her.

  • John his special disciple clinging to her perhaps need Mary’s special insight into the life of Jesus.
  • There was some things Mary held close to her heart about Jesus that no one would have known.

Luke 2:16-19

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

  • In Jesus we are all family. And share the common bond of salvation.
  • I find it odd that Jesus’ other half brothers were not told to take care of Mary.

(Matthew 13:55-56

\”Isn\’t this the carpenter\’s son? Isn\’t his mother\’s name Mary, and aren\’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren\’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?\”)

  1. Why was Jesus other half sisters not told to bond to their mother, like Ruth and Naomi
  2. Here we see the dynamics of Jesus family.
  3. Some were faithful to Jesus and some were not.

Mark 6:4-6

Jesus said to them, \”Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.\”

5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.

  • Friends are sometimes closer than blood relatives .

Matthew 12:46-50

46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, \”Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.\”

48 He replied to him, \”Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?\”  49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, \”Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.\”

ALL GOD’S COMMANDS FULFILLED IN JESUS

V:28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, \”I am thirsty.\”  29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus\’ lips.   30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, \”It is finished.\” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

  1. The work of the Father in Jesus was finished on the cross
  2. He had taught the sheep and led them to greener pastures.
  3. The disciples were now ready to assume the duties of the church

John 14:12-13

I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these because I am going to the Father.

  • Perhaps Jesus was thirsty for the glory of the Father He had before He became man
  • The wine vinegar may represent the bitterness of life all Christian share in Jesus Christ.
  • From His lips come the Word that is the source of our hope and eternal life.
  • Notice Jesus\’ death was a voluntary act of love.
  • With strength in His body and dedication to the Father, He gave up His spirit.
  • His last act was to bow His head to the Father.
  • His last words were humble submission to the Father,
  • When we lay down to sleep, it should be in humble submission to the Father.
  • We never know when our eyes close that we won\’t wake up in the presence of the Father,

Beholding our Lord and Savior.

THANK GOD FOR THE SAVING GRACE OF THE CROSS
