This Week\’s Sunday School Lesson, Walking With Jesus, Luke 24:13-32

WALKING WITH JESUS

Luke 24:13-32

SUNDAY SERVICE WITH JESUS

13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.

A. Church begins when Jesus shows up.

     1. Where two or more are gathered discussing the Word, Jesus is

          in the mist.

     2. Notice, this church service was on Sunday, the day of resurrection

         of Jesus.

     3. Notice, this Church service was in the street.

     4. This church service was all about what happened to Jesus on the

          cross.

B. This Church Service confirms the resurrection of Jesus.

     1. He died on Friday but came alive on Sunday Morning.

     2. This Church service confirm the testimony of the women disciples

that Jesus was not in the tomb.

     3. Notice verse 16, without the power of God, you will not recognize

         Jesus in the scriptures.

     4. Reading the Word of God will deepen your interest in Him.

     5. There will be times when God will not allow you to fully understand

the scriptures, to push you to study more.

UNDERSTANDING THE RESURRECTION

17 He asked them, \”What are you discussing together as you walk along?\”

They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, \”Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?\”

19 \”What things?\” he asked.

\”About Jesus of Nazareth,\” they replied. \”He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn\’t find his body.

A. One of the purposes of Jesus in your Bible Study is to guide you to

a deeper understanding of what you have read and heard.

    1. Jesus becomes the facilitator of your study.

    2. The first process in Bible Study is to review what you think

          you know.

     3. Review what you have read, been taught and what others have

         said about the text.

B. Many times our interpretation of the Bible is based on what we

want Jesus to do for us or what we think Jesus should do.

   1. Notice the two disciples were discouraged because what they

       wanted to happen didn’t happen.

   2. Their relationship with Jesus was based on their expectations.

   3. They witness injustice by local officials which led to the death

        of their Savor.

    4. Jesus was built up in their minds as the one who would get rid

         of all their troubles.

     5. Instead, a tragedy entered into their lives.

C. They had heard His teachings, witness His miracles and truly

believed that He had the power to overturn the Roman

government and would become their King.

     1. Their hope faded because Jesus didn’t meet their expectations.

     2. They knew Jesus was a man of God, but He had disappointed them.

     3. The God we serve does not work on our time table nor do things

        according to our thoughts.

     4. Jesus did not come into our lives to eliminate all of our problems.

     5. He came to give us hope for eternal life and carry us through

        difficult times.

D. They had good news in front of them and didn\’t recognize it.

    1. They had the testimony of the women and also Peter and John

that Jesus was not in the tomb.

     2. The cross was a means to an end, Jesus\’ resurrection.

     3. They knew the Word but did not recognize the truth of it.

     4. They remembered only what suited their appetite.

     5. Jesus had told them on a number of occasions that He would

die and be raised on the third day.

     6. They had Jesus walking beside them on the third day but couldn’t

recognize the victory of the cross.

      7. Just because we are disappointed in our circumstance does not

mean that God is not with us.

YOUR  TESTIMONY IS IMPORTANT

They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.\”

25 He said to them, \”How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?\”  27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

A. Sometimes we believe only what we want to believe about scriptures.

     1. We pick scriptures that confirm our own beliefs.

     2. We ignore scriptures that speak of discipline, difficulties, tragedies

and hardships as part of Christian living.

     3. These disciples held on to the scriptures that promised the coming

           Messiah.

           a. They ignored the scriptures that foretold an unjust tragic death.

           b. You cannot discard the Old Testament and have a full

                understanding of the New Testament.

       4. The New Testament is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies

             about Jesus.

        5. The testimonies of the women confirmed the Word of the Old

Testament and what Jesus told them about His death.

        6. They were blinded by their on interest.

    B. The Old Testament set the stage for the atonement of sin by a blood

          Sacrifice.

        1. The blood of sheep on the doorpost of the homes of the Israelites

preceded their release of freedom from Egypt.

         2. Our freedom from the penalty of sin comes through the atoning

blood of Jesus shed on the cross.

         3. The atoning blood of Jesus does not eliminate the hardships of life

             but guarantees victory over them.

INVITE JESUS INTO YOUR HOME

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, \”Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.\” So he went in to stay with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.

A. The best thing that you and I can do is to invite Jesus into our lives.

     1. We must invite Jesus daily to come to stay with us.

     2. Jesus knows what we need, but He is waiting for an invitation.

     3. We invite the world into our lives, and it brings sadness, hopelessness

          and  tragedy.

          a. The world comes into our lives through the news and the internet.

          b. Jesus comes to us through Bible study, praise and prayer.

       4. Jesus brings peace, joy, and comfort.

    B. When you invite Jesus into your life, He takes over as the host.

        1. Dinner with Jesus is better than any five-star restaurant.

        2. When you break bread with Jesus, you break bread with

             grace and mercy.

        3. Supper with Jesus is served with love and compassion.

        4. Jesus gives thanks to the Father for the pleasure of serving

            you.

SHARING THE WORD

31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, \”Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?\”

A. Jesus comes into our lives to enlighten us to His amazing grace.

     1. When we study the scriptures with Jesus, He brings clarity to

          will of the Father.

      2. Jesus leads us from the darkness of the world to the light of

           God’s glory.

B. As we study God’s Word, our hearts and minds ought to burn

with a desire to know more about Him.

    1. It is through  the study of God’s Word that we grow spiritually

        in Him

    2. It is through the study of God’s Word that we grow to love Him

and become convicted with the desire to follow His commands.
