WHAT GOD DOES WHEN HE IS FED UP WITH OUR SINS

\"11077676473_439c26968e_h\"

The God we serve is long-su\"14776390602_e4eeeeeb75_z\"ffering. He will tolerate our sins for a period of time. There is a time when our continued sins will result in His punishment. Eyes have not seen nor ears heard all that God will do to those that disobey His commands. God loves us and wants the best for us and chastises those He loves.

Amos 2:4-8

The nation of Israel, having been released from slavery in Egypt kept their slave mentality. They spent 40 years wondering in the desert because of their slave mentality. The God who freed them, gave them laws and doctrines of freedom. As a nation they refused to keep God\’s commands and thus lost their freedom. God made an everlasting covenant with Abraham that the promise land would  be given to His descendants (Gen 17:7).

God made a conditional covenant with Nation Israel concerning their prosperity in the promise land. Their success in the land was conditional on their obedience to God\’s commands (Ex 19:5)

THE SINS OF ISRAEL

V:4. \” This is what the Lord says: \”For three sins of Judah, even for four, I will not turn back [my wrath]. Because they have rejected the law of the Lord and have not kept his decrees, because they have been led astray by false gods, the gods their ancestors followed.\”

A. True freedom comes from following God\’s commands.
In the New and the Old Testaments, we have two great commands;

(1) Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength.
(2) Love your neighbor as yourself.

Jesus said if you love me, keep my commands. True freedom is in the love of Jesus. God is longsuffering, but He is not pleased with our sins.
The Israelites had been in the promise land for 700 years as free people. They were free, but still: imprisoned by their pagan beliefs, following their slave habits, disobeying God\’s commands.

\"14764065975_b6fe4dcb46_o\"

At Mount Sinai, God gave the nation of Israel His law to govern them and His decrees  to worship Him.  God made a covenant with Israel that if they kept His commands and statues they would prosper. God promised if they did not keep his commands, He would punish them.
First, The Israelites rejected God\’s commands. The commands of God covered every aspect of Jewish life. They did not want to live under God\’s rules. Second, They did not keep God\’s decrees for worship. Instead of bring the unblemished animals for a sacrifice to the Lord, they brought the lame and the cripple. Instead of bringing the best to God, the Israelites brought the worst animals for sacrifice.Third, the Israelites worshipped idol gods. Instead of worshiping the creator, they worshipped things created by the creator. Instead of worshipping the true and living God, they worshipped the gods of their imagination. Instead of worshipping the God who has all power, they worshipped the gods who had no power. Instead of believing the truth, they believed a lie.

V:5. \” I will send fire upon Judah that will consume the fortresses of Jerusalem.\”

The Temple that Solomon built in Jerusalem was constructed according God\’s specifications.  It was adorned with the best gold, silver and bronze. It was the place where God visited His priests in the Holy of Holiness. It was the place where all sacrifices to God was made. In 586 BC, the Temple was burned down, Jerusalem was destroyed and the people were taken into Babylonian captivity for 70 years.

1. Some of the blessings of God are conditional on our obedience.
2. The wrath of God is conditional on our disobedience.

Forth they sold their own people into slavery…

V:6. \” This is what the Lord says: \”For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not turn back [my wrath]. They sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals.\”

Not only did Israel turn against God, they also turned against their own people. They forgot the pain of their 430 years of slavery and enslaved their own people. They had a slave mentality, and found reasons to enslave their own. When their own could not pay a debt, they sold them into slavery for silver. They violated God\’s command, because a debt was to be forgiven in the 7th year. Honest people who could be relied on for repayment, were sold into slavery. The poor went into debt to purchase a pair of sandals. When they couldn\’t pay this small amount, they were enslaved. The Israelites became hard hearted in the face of the generosity of the Father.

Fifth, they denied justice to the poor

V:7. \” They trample on the heads of the poor as upon the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed. Father and son use the same girl and so profane my holy name.\”

The Israelites took advantage of the poor by denying them justice due according to God\’s commands; they showed no compassion for those in need.  As it is today the rich are in collusion with each other to deny human rights. According to the Adam Clark commentary, their judges were corrupt and took bribes to condemn the righteous.

Sixth, the violated God\’s covenant of Marriage

Marriage is the first divine institution of God. The woman was created to be the help mate of a man, to be loved and admired. Women were never intended to be prostitutes. They were never intended to be abused and misused. The men of Israel openly exposed their disrespect and disregard for God\’s commands by committing adultery and fornication with young women.  Fathers and sons had sex with the same women in direct violation to God\’s commands. Leaders of the community and fathers become poor role models, training up the next
generation of Israelites to be more violent and corrupt.

Seventh, they compounded sins

V:8. \” They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge. In the house of their
god they drink wine taken as fines.

The Israelites compounded their sins by finding new ways to displeased God. If a poor man\’s garment was taken in pledge, it was to be returned at sun down (Ex 22:25-27). In this text the term Man is the noun the word Poor is the adjective. modifying or qualifying the noun.  In other words this man is a child of God who happens to be poor.

They, the ancient Israelites, took the garment of a child of God who was under the covenant of God and laid on it in temple of their idol gods. In doing so they violated God\’s commands by worshipping idols and the rights of the children of God by keeping their garments. Therefore, God gave them over to their reprobate minds. God fed up with Israel\’s sinfulness announced through His prophets the judgment of Israel. Although, this passage in contexts speaks of Israel, it ultimately speaks to us as Christians today because the principles are the same:

Just as God made promises to Israel under the Law, God has made promises to us under Grace.
1. Promises of success are conditional on our obedience to God\’s commands.
2. God\’s judgment is based on our disobedience

OUR GREATEST FREEDOM IS IN OBEDIENCE TO GOD\’S COMMANDS

I really like the new site it is easy to view on my i-phone and on my desk top computer. The site looks like it actually adapts it self to the screen I am using. I can tell you either but in a lot of work or paid a lot of money, maybe both? I also like that you have started to add pictures not only in the slider, but your post. And, it is much easier to read in the paragraph form, too.

This Week’s Sunday School lesson was a little hard to take. It was easy enough to read and understand, but hard to listen to because it really makes one understand that one might not be as good as he/she thinks he/she is.

    • The Realist

While, I agree with you Mr. Scripture Detective about the new look of the website I disagree with you about the book of Amos making us Christians feel regret after all this is about ancient Israel not us Christians. We Christians do not need feel regret or worry, because we are saved by Grace apart from works of the law. And, I think it even says that the Law was nailed to the cross. We, can’t be perfect anyway so why even try, let’s just enjoy life while we can and be confident that faith saves. It’s party time!

      • Scripture Detective

Thank you for your advice ‘Realist’, however I wonder how do you interpret the following:

        Romans 6:1-6 (KJV)

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

        • The Realist

          Look Scripture Detective!
We, are all sinners saved by GRACE, not by works, get it? AND Paul, wasn’t even talking to us today he was only writing that letter to the Romans. He, was dealing with one group of people who trying to push their burdensome outdated commandments on to everyone else. At, the same time he had to deal with another group of people who knew that they were under Grace, but at the same time were flaunting it by eating food offered to idols. Well, Idols aren’t gods, so it really doesn’t matter anyhow, as long as we follow the rule to “love on another”. When, we do that we can safely ignore the rest of the Law, and enjoy life.

      • Rev. Melvin Mitchell

Remember this, the Law and all of the Old Testament was given as a tutor until Grace was established by the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
Everything in the Bible was given so that we can learn of God, know His love, grace and mercy.God is not concerned with our feelings, but
our redemption. God used the nation of Israel show us that He chastises those He loves. He hates sin, and loves righteousness.
The Word is designed to convict our hearts to pursue the righteousness of God.

    Listen Rev Mitchell,

Thank you so much for sharing the Gospel on your websites. I may not be smart enough to understand all of the points that ‘Scripture Detective’ and ‘the realist’ are arguing over, but I understand enough to know that what your wrote has had an impact on both of them. I can see that ‘the realist’ would not have felt the need to make excuses for himself if what you said had not have hit home with him and convicted him. Well, if the shoe fits wear it! We, are all in need of God grace, but that Grace does not just cover our backs, it is proactive in that is helps us to recover step by step. And, we are all God works in progress, not because God is slow because God gives us the space and the time we need to grow in our Christian walk.

Anyway Thank you so much for what you are doing here Mr. Mitchell!

    • Rev. Melvin Mitchell

Thanks for your encouragement. My joy is that you become more knowledgeable in the Word. When we share the Word together, we all gain.
I pray that God will use you to be a blessing to others.

I am really enjoying the new feel and look of your website Rev. M. Mitchell. And, I agree with much of what Sister Williams had to say about some of the recent arguments above. Thank you for spreading the word and speaking in such a clear and easy to understand way. I look forward to hearing what you have to say on rest of the book of Amos.

    • Rev. Melvin Mitchell

Thanks for your comments. We don’t all have to agree on every thing in the Bible. The Apostle Paul said, I determined to know nothing, but
Jesus Christ and Him crucified. It is only that fact that will gain us Eternal Life.

Keep studying the Word of God and the Holy Spirit will give YOU the understanding YOU need.

  4. a witness for Jehovah

    Good evening Mr. Mitchell,

I love you new site, too! I think you sound like a powerful preacher and man of God. However, I also notice that you don’t often call God by his name and he has one. Want to learn more?

GOD WANTS YOU TO KNOW WHO HE IS!

When you want someone to get to know you, do you not mention your name? God reveals his name to us in the Bible What is God’s name, and why should we use it? If you want someone to get to know you, what might you do? Would you not tell the person your name? Does God have a name? Many religions answer that his name is “God” or “Lord,” but those are not personal names. They are titles, just as “king” and “president” are titles. The Bible teaches that God has many titles. “God” and “Lord” are among them. However, the Bible also teaches that God has a personal name: Jehovah. Psalm 83:18 says: “You, whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the Most High over all the earth.” If your Bible translation does not contain that name, you may want to consult the Appendix article “The Divine Name—Its Use and Its Meaning” to learn why that is so. The truth is that God’s name appears thousands of times in ancient Bible manuscripts. So Jehovah wants you to know his name and to use it. In a sense, he is using the Bible to introduce himself to you.

What does the name Jehovah mean?
15 God gave himself a name that is full of meaning. His name, Jehovah, means that God can fulfill any promise he makes and can carry out any purpose he has in mind. * God’s name is unique, one of a kind. It belongs only to him. In a number of ways, Jehovah is unique. How is that so?

What may we learn about Jehovah from the following titles: (a) “the Almighty”? (b) “King of eternity”? (c) “Creator”?
We saw that Psalm 83:18 said of Jehovah: “You alone are the Most High.” Similarly, Jehovah alone is referred to as “the Almighty.” Revelation 15:3 says: “Great and wonderful are your works, Jehovah God, the Almighty. Righteous and true are your ways, King of eternity.” The title “the Almighty” teaches us that Jehovah is the most powerful being there is. His power is unmatched; it is supreme. And the title “King of eternity” reminds us that Jehovah is unique in another sense. He alone has always existed. Psalm 90:2 says: “From everlasting to everlasting, you are God.” That thought inspires awe, does it not?

Jehovah is also unique in that he alone is the Creator. Revelation 4:11 reads: “You are worthy, Jehovah our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power, because you created all things, and because of your will they came into existence and were created.” Everything that you can think of—from the invisible spirit creatures in heaven to the stars that fill the night sky to the fruit that grows on the trees to the fish that swim in the oceans and rivers—all of it exists because Jehovah is the Creator!

    • Rev. Melvin Mitchell

When I say God, I do mean all the names that apply to Him. He is Jehovah, He is also Elohim. He is the triune God; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. He is Alpha and Omega. He is the eternal God. He is God the Creator. He is God the eternal judge. The list can go on and on.

      Thanks

I thought Jesus came to save and not to condemn? I know there are promises in the Bible that we can claim. Name it claim all we have to do is ask.

    • Rev. Melvin Mitchell

You are correct, Jesus did come to save. His death on the cross atoned for the sins of all men and women, past present and future.
Those who are condemned are the ones who reject Jesus as Lord and Savior. No one is condemn for their sins, but for their rejection
of the saving, atoning blood of Jesus for their sins.

    • Rev. Melvin Mitchell

You are correct. Jesus came to save the lost. His shed blood made it possible for everybody to be saved. Those who are condemned
are the ones who reject Jesus as Lord and Savior of their lives. Think of it his way; If you run a red light knowing the Law
and get a ticket. Is the judge wrong for making you pay the find? Jesus paid the fine for our sins if we can accept His death
      as payment.
